The warlord Timur (Tamerlane) makes himself master of Transoxiana and begins the conquest of Iran.
A Turco-Mongol from near Samarkand, Timur claimed the mantle of Genghis Khan and built a vast empire through relentless war. Over the next decades he overran Iran, sacked Delhi, defeated the Ottomans, and left towers of skulls behind him — even as he made his capital one of the wonders of the world.

Timur storms Delhi and massacres its inhabitants, one of the bloodiest episodes of his campaigns.
The plunder of the wealthy sultanate enriched Timur's empire and fed the building of Samarkand. He carried off artisans and craftsmen to adorn his capital, a practice that concentrated the talent of Asia in his Central Asian heartland even as it depopulated the lands he conquered.

At Ankara, Timur crushes the Ottoman sultan Bayezid I and takes him prisoner, briefly shattering the young Ottoman state.
The capture of Bayezid plunged the Ottomans into a decade of civil war and delayed the fall of Constantinople by fifty years. Timur, now the undisputed master of the Islamic east, turned toward a planned invasion of China — but died at Otrar in 1405 before he could set out.

Timur's son Shah Rukh moves the capital to Herat and presides over a dazzling revival of Persian art and letters.
Under Shah Rukh and his cultured queen Gawhar Shad, Herat became the jewel of the Persianate world. Miniature painting, calligraphy, architecture, and poetry flourished, and the Timurid style would inspire the Mughals of India and the Safavids of Iran for generations to come.

The scholar-prince Ulugh Beg builds a great observatory at Samarkand and compiles a celebrated star catalogue.
Timur's grandson Ulugh Beg was an astronomer of the first rank. His Zij-i Sultani mapped over a thousand stars with an accuracy unmatched for two centuries. His murder by his own son in 1449 was a blow to Timurid science, but his tables spread west and were studied in Europe.

The 'Black Sheep' and 'White Sheep' Turkmen confederations contend for western Iran as Timurid power fades.
The Qara Qoyunlu and their rivals the Aq Qoyunlu were tribal confederations of Oghuz Turks who ruled Azerbaijan, western Iran, and Iraq from Tabriz. Their courts too patronized Persian culture, and their endless wars set the stage for a new power rising among the Sufi orders of the northwest.

Under Uzun Hasan the Aq Qoyunlu dominate Iran and negotiate with Venice against the Ottomans before his death in 1478.
Uzun Hasan defeated the Qara Qoyunlu and the Timurids and sought European allies against the rising Ottomans, but was beaten at Otlukbeli in 1473. His realm fractured after his death — and his own grandson would soon be swept aside by the Safavid revolution born of a militant Sufi brotherhood.

The Sufi order of Ardabil, once quietist, becomes a militant Shia movement with a devoted following of Qizilbash warriors.
The Safavid family transformed their spiritual brotherhood into a revolutionary force, drawing Turkmen tribesmen — the 'red-heads' or Qizilbash — who revered their leaders as near-divine. When the child Ismail inherited the order's leadership, he carried both a claim to sanctity and an army of fanatical devotees.

The fifteen-year-old Ismail takes Tabriz, crowns himself shah, and declares Twelver Shiism the religion of Iran.
With his Qizilbash cavalry Ismail overthrew the Aq Qoyunlu and seized the northwest, founding the dynasty that would reunify Iran for the first time since the Arab conquest. His decision to impose Shiism gave the new state a distinct identity that still shapes Iran — the opening of the Safavid age.
